About siding

Most siding problems come from the install: trim in the wrong color with no conversation, panels warping or falling off the first winter, a top row that goes wavy because it was nailed through the face.

We install vinyl, James Hardie fiber cement and LP SmartSide. Vinyl is the one most often hung wrong. It expands in the sun and shrinks in the cold, so it has to be hung loosely, with the top edge held by undersill or utility trim instead of nails through the panel. Done wrong, you see it within a summer.

What's behind the siding matters just as much. Housewrap has to be lapped like shingles, upper over lower, with tears taped. It can't be left covering attic or dryer vents. Rotten sheathing has to be replaced, not covered over.

We put every product, color and profile in writing, and we photograph the hidden details so you have a record of what's behind your walls.

Siding

Signs your siding needs attention

  • Warping or wavy panels

Panels that buckle or ripple were usually nailed too tight or through the face, so they can't move with the temperature.

  • Panels falling off

Siding that comes loose within months of install usually comes down to improper nailing or missing details, both correctable.

  • Water getting behind the wall

Stains inside, soft spots or peeling paint near windows point to missing flashing or damaged housewrap.

  • Trim that doesn't match

A color mismatch between siding and trim is not normal. Every trim color should be in writing before work starts.

  • Re-roofing anyway

If your roof is being replaced, it's a good time to look at the walls and the flashing where roof meets siding.

Step by step

How our siding jobs go

  1. A written materials schedule

Before you sign, you get the exact siding brand, product line, color and profile, plus every trim piece: J-channel, corner posts, soffit, fascia wrap, and window and door trim.

  2. Strip and inspect the wall

We look at the existing housewrap and sheathing. Damaged or missing housewrap is replaced and rotten sheathing comes out before anything new goes up.

  3. Housewrap and flashing

Housewrap is lapped upper over lower with tears taped, kept clear of attic and dryer vents, and flashing goes in at every window, door and roof-to-wall intersection.

  4. Hang the siding right

Vinyl panels are nailed loosely in the right overlap direction so water can't drive into the laps, and the top course is held with undersill trim instead of face nails. Fiber cement and SmartSide go up to their manufacturers' installation instructions.

  5. Clean up and walk around

The crew cleans up debris and nails at the end of every day. Before we invoice, we do a final walk-around with you and hand over photos of the housewrap and flashing.

Questions

Siding: straight answers.

More in the full questions & answers, or call (484) 647-7466.

What's the most common siding mistake?

Nailing the top row of vinyl through the face of the panel. Vinyl needs to expand and contract, so the top course is held with undersill or utility trim. Done wrong, the top row goes wavy within one summer.

Do you only install vinyl siding?

No. We install vinyl, James Hardie fiber cement and LP SmartSide. The materials schedule you get before you sign names the exact product, line, color and profile.

Will the trim colors match the siding?

Yes. Every piece is specified in writing before we start: J-channel, corners, soffit, fascia wrap, and window and door trim. Mismatched trim installed without a conversation won't happen on our jobs.

What happens to the housewrap underneath?

We inspect it before new siding goes on. If it's damaged, torn or missing, we replace it. We don't install new siding over compromised housewrap, and we make sure it doesn't block attic or dryer vents.

What if the sheathing behind my siding is rotten?

It gets replaced before the new siding goes up. Covering rot with new panels just hides the problem for a while.

My siding is falling off. Can you help?

Yes. We'll come out, inspect what was installed, document what we find and give you honest options. Most of these problems come down to improper nailing or missing flashing, and both are correctable.

Can you do the roof and siding together?

Yes. We do both, and doing them together lets us get the flashing right where the roof meets the walls.
