Roofing in Slatington
Slatington’s houses and their roofs.
Slate built this place. Welshmen found it in the 19th century, a quarry opened in 1845 and a factory followed in 1847, and the borough's own history says the Lehigh Slate Company's quarries in and around town were among the largest in the country. Roofing shingles and school chalkboards went out by canal and later by rail.
The housing is old even by Lehigh County standards: about 63 percent of the borough's 1,925 homes were built before 1940, and the median house dates to 1938. The Slatington Historic District, listed in 2004, takes in 506 contributing buildings across the business district and the residential streets around it, and the borough points to the elaborate slate on its roofs as the local material at its best.
We work out of Newtown, and the borough is on our service list. Our replacements use architectural shingles, Owens Corning Duration as standard. We don't repair or install slate, but before any tear-off we will tell you whether yours still has years in it.

Slate on the older streets
Good slate can outlast several owners. What gives out first is usually the flashing, the nails and the metal in the valleys, so old slate with a few broken pieces is not automatically a replacement, and an honest inspection says so.
Victorian homes near downtown
Large houses with steep pitches, dormers and tall chimneys. Steep roofs shed snow well, but chimney flashing and the joints where dormers meet the main roof take years of punishment.
Twins and small apartment houses
About 29 percent of homes are single-family attached and another fifth sit in buildings of two to four units. Those roofs are often split between owners, and a repair on one side has to respect the other.
Hillside lots above the river
The borough climbs from about 345 feet at the Lehigh River to 742 feet on the hill south of South Street. Houses up the slope take more wind, which lifts shingle tabs and works loose any slate that has lost its nails.
Wind on the hill, ice at the eaves
The valley averages about 33 inches of snow a season, and the 2016 blizzard dropped 31.9 inches at the Allentown airport. On steep slate, snow lets go in sheets and can rip gutters and hangers down with it. On the shingled porch roofs and rear additions below, it sits, melts and refreezes at the eaves. We check both: the gutters under a steep roof, and the eaves of the low ones.

From our Google reviews
“This company is great! The owner came out for an inspection, and found a small damage area. Since the rest of the roof is fine, he did not push at all and just help me fixed that small portion free of charge. Total respect for the honesty and kindness, and will definitely go there when I need a new roof. Highly recommend!”

Should I keep my slate or replace it?
It depends on the slate and the flashing more than the age. Sound slate with failing flashing is usually worth keeping; slate that is flaking, soft or slipping all over the roof points to a shingle replacement, which is the work we do. The free inspection photographs what we find so you can judge the condition yourself.
Does the Slatington Historic District limit what roof I can put on?
The district is on the National Register, and that listing alone does not restrict a private owner spending private money. We found no borough historic-review ordinance. We get whatever permits the borough requires. If keeping the look of the house matters to you, we will talk through it honestly.
Why does slate leak if it lasts so long?
Because the parts around the slate don't last as long. Nails rust, valley metal wears through and chimney flashing pulls away from the mortar. On an older Slatington house, those are the first places we look.
Is a house from the 1930s too old for a one-day roof?
Age changes the prep more than the schedule. Most homes are still done in one day; when an old deck needs many sheets replaced it can run longer, and you get a photo of every sheet we change.
