Roofing in Macungie
Macungie’s houses and their roofs.
Peter Miller started Millerstown here in 1776; it became a borough in 1857 and took the name Macungie in 1875. The borough covers about one square mile, almost completely surrounded by Lower Macungie Township, with Swabia Creek running through it and South Mountain just to the south.
Its housing has an unusual shape. Census estimates count about 1,500 homes, and roughly 550 of them, 37 percent, were built in the 1980s, by far the biggest decade. Single-family attached homes, meaning twins, rows and townhouses, make up about 42 percent of the stock, more than detached houses. About one home in five is older than 1940, mostly in and around the Main Street town center.
A roof put on in the 1980s and never replaced is well past a typical asphalt shingle's working life. Macungie is on our service list even though our Newtown office is about 40 miles off. A free inspection will tell you where yours stands.

1980s homes and townhouses
The largest group in the borough. If the original shingles are still on, look for curling, bare spots and granules in the gutters; on attached units, the shared ridge and wall flashing need to be done in step with the neighbors.
Pre-1940 houses near Main Street
The borough's zoning treats removing a front porch roof or porch columns on these older buildings as partial demolition, so repairs keep the porch roof in place and simply make it tight.
1990s homes
About 200 houses from the following decade are reaching the same point. A targeted repair can stretch a sound roof while you plan for the replacement.
Below South Mountain, along Swabia Creek
The ridge of South Mountain rises just south of the borough. Lehigh Valley winters stay below freezing on average in January, so snow melts and refreezes at the eaves, and older roofs without ice and water shield let that water work under the shingles.
A roof that has lost its granules also lets summer sun bake the asphalt, so shingles turn brittle and crack in the next cold snap. On a 1980s roof, that wear tends to show up first on the south-facing slopes, which take the most sun. An attic check after a hard winter shows whether any water got through.

Does Macungie review roof work on older houses?
The borough's zoning has a rule for buildings from 1940 or earlier: removing features like a front porch roof or porch columns facing the street counts as partial demolition and needs approval. Ordinary maintenance and repair that doesn't change the appearance is defined separately. Check with the borough, and we pull the permit required.
My townhouse roof is original to the 1980s. Can I replace just my unit?
Often, yes, unless an association handles roofs. The key is tying the new roof into your neighbors' at the shared walls so the joints stay dry, and we explain that before you sign.
How long does a replacement take?
On most houses the crew finishes the same day. They arrive between about 6:30 and 7:30 in the morning, tarp the landscaping and run a magnet for nails before they leave.
Do you serve the houses in Lower Macungie too?
Yes. The borough is surrounded by Lower Macungie Township, and we serve homes on both sides of the line, with permits from whichever municipality your house is in.
