Roofing in Coplay
Coplay’s houses and their roofs.
The borough covers 0.6 square miles on the west bank of the Lehigh River and was incorporated in 1869 out of Whitehall Township. The borough's own history credits the Thomas Iron Company with bringing in workers and building homes for them. After the iron company came a cement mill, a silk mill, a cigar factory and a knitting mill, and the nine brick kilns the Coplay Cement Company built in 1892 and 1893 still stand at Saylor Park.
That history shows in the housing. Single-family attached homes are the largest group, about 39 percent of 1,504 units, just ahead of detached houses at 38 percent. Roughly 37 percent were built before 1940, yet more than a quarter went up in 1980 or later, so a single block can pair a century-old twin with a much newer house.
We come out from Newtown, and every quote starts with an inspection of your own roof, never assumptions about the block.
Know the house
Roofs you’ll find around Coplay.
Twins from the mill era
Two households under one ridge, often re-roofed at different times. The seam over the party wall and the step flashing where one roof meets a taller neighbor are the common leak points.
Older detached houses
Narrow two-story homes set close together, with chimneys that have been repointed more than once. Flashing that was caulked instead of properly stepped into the brick is something we find and fix.
Newer houses, 1980 and later
Newer is not the same as sound. Shingles laid in the 1980s through the early 2000s are at or past their expected life, and attic ventilation on these houses is worth checking before anything is replaced.
Two- to four-unit buildings
About 18 percent of homes sit in small multi-unit buildings. Low-slope rear sections and porch roofs on these are where ponding and slow leaks show up first.
Cold, wet winters on a river borough
January in neighboring Hokendauqua averages about 29 degrees, and the Lehigh Valley gets roughly 33 inches of snow in a normal season; the 2016 blizzard put 31.9 inches on the Allentown airport in two days. On attached houses, snow drifts against the higher wall where one roof steps up to the next, and that is exactly where meltwater finds old step flashing.

From our Google reviews
“Mission Roof recently replaced the roof on our house. Communication with Lori and Dave was great. We were kept informed of what would happen , and when. All of our questions were answered quickly. The crew completed the roof in one day, despite a passing thunderstorm with lightening! Clean up was so through, you couldn’t even tell they were here. We are very happy with the work and workmanship and would definitely recommend Mission to anyone.”

My half of the twin is older than my neighbor's. Can the two roofs be joined properly?
Yes. We strip your side, flash and seal the joint at the party wall, and photograph it before shingles cover it. If the neighbor's side is failing at that seam, we tell both of you what we saw instead of burying it under new material.
Is a Coplay house built in the 1980s due for a new roof?
Possibly, if it still has its original shingles. Age alone is not the verdict, though. The free inspection looks at the attic, the deck from below and the shingles themselves, and the report says repair, partial or full replacement in plain words.
Do you deal with the borough on permits?
We pull the permits the borough requires for the job and handle that paperwork, so you aren't running back and forth to the borough office.
How do you protect a small yard during tear-off?
Tarps go over landscaping, the AC unit and anything else near the house before the old roof comes off. A magnetic roller sweeps for nails daily and again at the end, and the dumpster is usually gone within one to three days.
