Roofing in Southampton

Southampton’s houses and their roofs.

Upper Southampton has had its present boundaries since the old township was divided in 1928. Its first subdivision came three decades earlier, in 1898, when Elliot Rightly bought part of the Bean farm and laid out Hampton, Belmont and Summit Avenues by the village.

Peace after the Second World War brought what the township's own history calls explosive development, starting with Southampton Heights as an extension of the village and continuing with more typical suburban tracts; a zoning code followed in 1954. The census dates 26 percent of the 6,329 homes to the 1960s and another 26 percent to the 1950s, and three in four are single detached houses.

Fewer than 5 percent are newer than 2000, so nearly every roof in town sits on a house past its fiftieth birthday. We inspect and replace them from our office in Newtown.

Know the house

Roofs you’ll find around Southampton.

  • The 1898 village streets

The oldest subdivision blocks around Hampton, Belmont and Summit Avenues. Houses of mixed ages, some with steeper roofs and chimneys that have outlived several roofs.

  • Southampton Heights and 1950s tracts

The first postwar wave. These roofs are well into their replacement cycle, so we check deck condition at the eaves and attic ventilation before quoting.

  • 1960s and 1970s houses

The township's busiest decade and the one after it. Many carry a 1990s or 2000s roof that is reaching its end; curled tabs and bare patches on the sunniest slope are the first sign.

Isaias, August 4, 2020

When Tropical Storm Isaias crossed the county on August 4, 2020, the National Weather Service tracked a tornado that touched down briefly in the Southampton area with winds near 90 mph. It snapped numerous trees, and many homes and cars were damaged by falling trees and limbs; the Sycamore Drive and Harding Road areas were hit hardest.

In that storm the damage came mostly from above, as limbs. July thunderstorms and February nor'easters, the wettest and snowiest months here, carry most of the risk the rest of the time.

“David and his staff were incredible! They were very helpful throughout the claims process and extremely efficient with the roof repair. They went above and beyond. I would highly recommend them”

A limb or a whole tree just landed on the house. What do I do first?

Stay out of the rooms under it, take photos from the ground, and call your insurer and us. We'll get the water stopped, inspect what the impact did to the deck and rafters, and meet your adjuster at no charge.

My address says Southampton but my neighbor's says Holland. Same rules?

The ZIP is shared but the townships aren't. Southampton addresses are typically in Upper Southampton, while Holland belongs to Northampton Township, and each issues its own permits. We pull from whichever one your house is actually in.

Is a 1960s house too old for architectural shingles?

No. The age of the house doesn't limit the shingle; the deck does. If the old boards or plywood are sound, the new roof goes right on. Where they aren't, we replace sheets at the flat rate in your contract and show you a photo of each one.

How long does a free roof inspection take?

About 45 to 60 minutes. We start in the attic, walk the roof when it's safe, check every vent, pipe and chimney, and send a written report with photos. There's no charge for it.
