The valley's largest borough, across the Susquehanna from downtown: almost all of its houses predate 1980, many hold two to four households, and it carries a long memory of the 1972 flood.

Roofing in Kingston

Kingston’s houses and their roofs.

Across the river from the city, the borough grew after the Lackawanna and Bloomsburg Railroad arrived and was incorporated in 1857. Coal was the main industry until the 1959 Knox Mine Disaster shut mining down. In June 1972, Agnes flooded the borough so badly that it drew a state of emergency and a visit from President Nixon.

With 13,349 residents in 2020, it is the most populous borough in Luzerne County, packed into 2.2 square miles. Only 9 percent of its 6,432 homes were built in 1980 or later. A third predate 1940 and the rest went up between the 1940s and the 1970s. Half are detached, and about 22 percent sit in buildings of two to four units.

We drive up from Newtown and don't claim to know your block. What we bring is the same inspection and written report we use everywhere, applied to houses that are, nearly all of them, more than 45 years old.

Know the house

Roofs you’ll find around Kingston.

  • Two- to four-unit houses

Buildings with several households carry one roof for all of them. Leaks get reported late because the top-floor tenant notices first, so we look hard at the attic and the upper ceilings.

  • Mid-century singles

Homes from the 1940s through the 1970s make up more than half the borough. Their roofs have been replaced before, and ventilation and decking decide whether the next one lasts.

  • Pre-war frame houses

Steep gables, dormers and porch roofs on houses near a century old. Decades of patching can leave a roof that looks fine from the street and tells a different story from the attic.

A cold valley floor and 46 inches of snow

Local climate records show a January average of about 26 degrees, 36 days a year when the high stays below freezing, and roughly 46 inches of snow. That is a long time for snow to sit on a roof. On a low porch roof or rear addition it backs up as ice at the eaves, and on a multi-unit roof the warmth rising from several apartments can make the melt-and-refreeze cycle worse.

The river is the other half of the story. Levees failed across the valley during Agnes in 1972, and the borough was devastated.

“Dave and his team were excellent. my roof was damaged by a hail storm in April 2023 After another contractor walked away from the job, Dave stepped in and worked with the insurance adjuster and was able to get my roof replaced. They did great work and delivered everything on time and as promised. I would definitely recommend Mission Roofing.”

I own a two-unit house and rent the top floor. What should I check before winter?

Look at the top unit's ceilings, and the attic if you can get in, for stains around the chimney and along the eaves. Better yet, book the free inspection in the fall so any flashing or ice-dam problem is fixed before tenants are living under it.

My house went through the 1972 flood. Does that affect the roof?

Not directly in most cases, but a house that old has usually had its roof redone more than once since. The inspection sorts out what is sound from what was patched along the way.

Is Kingston really in your service area?

Yes, it's on our service list. Our office is in Newtown, so estimates here are booked ahead, and the free inspection and written report are no different from anywhere else.

How long will a replacement take on a single-family house?

Most homes are done in one day. The crew arrives around 6:30 to 7:30 in the morning, tarps the yard, tears off, replaces bad decking, installs and cleans up, and the dumpster is usually gone one to three days later.
