Roofing in Palmerton
Palmerton’s houses and their roofs.
Most of this borough was planned and built by the zinc company that set up its smelters here early in the 20th century and named the town for its president, Stephen S. Palmer. That is why the grid is so regular: avenues named for colleges run east to west, numbered streets run from First to Eighth, and most houses in the central and southern parts of town are doubles, one building split down the middle into two homes.
The census numbers back it up. Of about 2,870 homes, 43 percent were built before 1940 and roughly seven in ten before 1970, for a median year built of 1947. About a quarter are single-family attached. The Palmerton Historic District, listed on the National Register in 2018, counts 1,262 contributing buildings put up between about 1890 and 1962.
Our office is in Newtown. On houses this old, we start in the attic and look at the decking before we talk about shingles.

Roofs you’ll find around Palmerton.
Company-built doubles
One roof, two owners. The ridge runs across both halves, so the line where they meet needs to be built as carefully as any valley. When only one side is re-roofed, we tie the new shingles and flashing into the neighbor's roof without lifting or damaging it.
Prewar houses on the avenues
Homes from before 1940 have usually been re-roofed more than once. Plank or early plywood decking under several old layers is common, and that is where soft spots hide. We photograph every sheet of decking we replace.
Postwar and 1960s houses
About 28 percent of the borough's homes date from the 1940s through the '60s. Many are on their second or third roof, with original vent boots and chimney flashing that should come off with the old shingles.
Old trees, close houses and summer storms
The severe storm on the evening of June 6, 2026 left a large part of a tree lying along the 400 block of Lafayette Avenue, according to the Times News. On a grid of closely spaced houses under mature trees, a falling limb can crack decking, tear gutters and break the shared ridge of a double without anyone noticing from the sidewalk.
After a storm, we check the roof itself, not just the yard: creased or missing shingles, dented vents, gutters pulled loose and any spot where a branch hit. Wind-lifted shingles that look fine from below can let water in at the next rain.

From our Google reviews
“I had an excellent experience with Mission Roof, who recently completed a full roof replacement on a set of twin homes, including mine. The amount of work required—especially with a full redeck—was significant, and yet they completed the entire job in just about a day and a half. Even with some weather delays, their efficiency was truly impressive. Their professionalism stood out from day one. Communication was clear and consistent, and the crew was extremely courteous. Cleanliness was clearly a top priority—they used tarps in every possible area to protect the property and made sure everything was spotless when they wrapped up. The new roof looks fantastic and, more importantly, it's performing flawlessly—previous leak issues are completely gone. The price was very fair for the level of quality, both in materials and workmanship. A special shoutout to Dave, who was great to work with. He explained everything clearly—from what they needed from us to how and when the work would be done. He made the process smooth and stress-free. I 100% recommend Mission Roof to anyone—homeowners or commercial property managers alike. Top-notch work, great people, and outstanding value.”

Can I replace my half of a double without my neighbor redoing theirs?
Yes. We stop the new roof at the dividing line and flash it into the neighbor's side so water can't get between the two. If both owners want to do the work together, one tear-off over the whole building usually makes for a cleaner ridge and one schedule.
Does the Palmerton Historic District limit what roof I can put on?
The National Register listing by itself doesn't restrict what a private owner does with private money. We take care of whatever permits the borough requires, and if keeping the look of a company-era house matters to you, we will talk through shingle colors and profiles with you.
A tree came down in the June storm. Should I get the roof checked even if I don't see a leak?
Yes. Impact damage often shows up as cracked decking or broken seals under shingles that still look in place. Our inspection is free, starts in the attic and comes with photos, so you have a record if you file a claim.
Do you come out to Carbon County for estimates?
Yes. Palmerton is in our service area, and estimates are scheduled ahead. You get the same free inspection and written photo report as a homeowner near our Newtown office.
