Roofing in Fairless Hills

Fairless Hills’s houses and their roofs.

The community began in 1951, when the Danherst Corporation started putting up prefabricated houses made by Gunnison Magichomes, a U.S. Steel subsidiary, backed by a $50 million loan from the steel company. It took its name from Benjamin Fairless, president of U.S. Steel, whose Fairless Works began making steel nearby in 1952 and employed most of the first owners.

The census places 54 percent of the community's 3,460 homes in the 1950s and another fifth in the 1960s; barely one in eight is newer than 1980. Later builders named their own sections, among them Heddington, Drexelwood and Fairbridge North.

Factory panels or not, these are houses in their seventies, and most of what sits on top has been changed by a string of owners. Our office is a short drive away in Newtown, and every job starts by finding out what is really under the shingles.

Know the house

Roofs you’ll find around Fairless Hills.

  • Original 1950s houses

The first Gunnison-built homes, many enlarged since. Their roofs have been replaced several times, so we look for stacked layers and for decking gone soft at the eaves after decades of ice.

  • 1960s sections

The second building wave, about a fifth of today's homes. Usually simpler roofs, but old enough that any chimney or vent flashing never redone is long past its life.

  • Additions and raised dormers

Seventy years of owners adding space leaves roof planes meeting at odd heights. When we replace the roof, each of those transitions gets ice and water shield and new step flashing.

Spring squall lines and seventy winters

The storm line of April 1, 2023 that produced an EF1 tornado farther north also caused wind damage on the 200 block of Lincoln Highway in Falls Township that same evening. The 2020s are the county's most active tornado decade on record, and fast lines like that one are what most often lift and crease shingles here.

The slower damage belongs to winter. A deck that has carried several roofs doesn't shed meltwater as well as it once did, and ice backing up at the eaves will find every gap in tired drip edge.

“Had a good experience with mission roof. My roof was aged and leaking. They did a replacement. Happy with the experience end to end.”

Were Fairless Hills houses really factory-built?

The first ones were. Starting in 1951, the developer erected prefabricated homes made by Gunnison Magichomes, a U.S. Steel company. That doesn't change how a new roof goes on today, but it's why we look at the original framing and deck before quoting instead of assuming.

Who issues the roofing permit for a house in Fairless Hills?

Fairless Hills is a community inside Falls Township, not its own municipality, so the township is the permit office. We pull whatever it requires before any work starts.

How long will the roof take on a 1950s house here?

Most single homes are torn off and roofed in one day, with the crew arriving around 6:30 to 7:30 in the morning. Rotten decking adds time only where we find it, and every replaced sheet is photographed.

Is a 25-year-old roof on my house worth repairing?

Sometimes. If the problem is one flashing detail and the shingles still hold their granules, a repair with a written warranty on that area is the honest answer. If the field is curling and the deck is soft in places, patching only postpones the bill, and the photos will show you which case you have.
