Roofing in Nanticoke

Nanticoke’s houses and their roofs.

Carved out of Hanover and Newport Townships, the town was a village by 1830, a borough in 1874 and a third-class city in 1926, after its biggest growth spurt between 1917 and 1925. At its peak in the 1930s, more than 27,000 people lived here, most of them tied to the mines. When mining collapsed, the population fell, but the houses stayed.

Those houses are old: 43 percent of 5,076 homes were built before 1940, 65 percent before 1960, and the median year is 1946. Just under 9 percent are from 1980 or later. Half are detached singles and about 19 percent are twins and other attached homes. The city is hilly, at about 700 feet, with Luzerne County Community College's main campus inside its limits.

From Newtown, we bring Nanticoke what we offer everywhere: an honest inspection, a written quote good for 30 days and no pressure to sign.

Know the house

Roofs you’ll find around Nanticoke.

  • Houses on the hillside streets

Homes set into slopes, often with one side higher than the other. Rear roofs and additions can be low and out of sight from the street, which is where water tends to sit.

  • Mining-era doubles

Two households under one roof, often with porches across the front. The porch roofs and the seam above the shared wall need regular attention.

  • 1940s and '50s singles

About one home in five. Simple gable roofs that have been re-covered more than once by now, over decking that may be the original boards.

Snow on the hills, the river at the edge

A January average near 27 degrees and a valley snow season of more than 40 inches mean snow stays on roofs for weeks. On a hill, wind scours one side of a roof and drifts snow onto the other, so leaks show up on the sheltered side, in valleys and behind chimneys.

The Susquehanna runs along the city's edge. When Tropical Storm Lee pushed it to a record in September 2011, mandatory evacuations stretched from West Pittston down to Nanticoke, and West Nanticoke across the river was inundated.

“David and his kind crew of installers did an exceptionally great job on the roof of our humble home. My wife and I are very happy and look forward to doing more projects thanks to the inspiration of a new roof. .”

My house sits on a steep street. Does that complicate a roof replacement?

It changes the setup, not the result. During the estimate we work out where the dumpster and material delivery can go, then tarp the yard and keep the street side clean every day.

Which side of my roof will leak first?

On Nanticoke's hills it is often the slope the snow drifts onto, plus the spots where a roof meets a wall or chimney. The inspection checks every slope, not just the one you see from the sidewalk.

Do you work with insurance after a storm?

Yes. We document the damage, attend the adjuster meeting at no charge and submit supplements for anything hidden that turns up. We will not waive or cover a deductible; that is insurance fraud in Pennsylvania.

How old is a typical house in Nanticoke?

The median year built is 1946, and more than four in ten homes predate 1940. That age is why we always check how many roof layers are up there and what shape the boards underneath are in.
