Roofing in Plains

Plains’s houses and their roofs.

Connecticut settlers built cabins near the mouth of Mill Creek in 1762, and the name comes from Jacob's Plains, after a Delaware leader named Jacob who lived on the flat ground by the river. The township was formed in 1851 from parts of Wilkes-Barre and Pittston Townships. It covers 13.2 square miles, from the Susquehanna in the northwest to the north slope of Wyoming Mountain in the southeast.

People live mostly in the northwest, along Main Street and River Street and in villages like Hudson, Plainsville, Midvale and Hilldale; the south and east are largely forested mountain. The housing splits two ways: 32 percent of homes predate 1940 and 33 percent went up in 1980 or later, with a median of 1964. About 55 percent are detached and 20 percent attached.

We cover the whole township from Newtown. Old village house or newer development, the inspection starts in the attic.

Know the house

Roofs you’ll find around Plains.

  • Village houses on the valley floor

Older frame singles and doubles near Main and River Streets. Roofs this old may sit on top of earlier layers, so we count them, and chimney flashing is the usual weak point.

  • Houses from 1980 onward

A third of the township's homes. Original shingles from the 1980s and '90s are near the end of their run, and a replacement is the right time to fix undersized attic ventilation.

  • Lots on the rising ground toward the mountain

Higher, more wooded lots. Trees bring shade, moss and fallen limbs, and the open spots bring wind.

Valley cold, mountain wind and heavy snow

January in the village of Plains averages about 27 degrees, and the Wyoming Valley gets roughly 46 inches of snow in a typical winter. Snow that lingers on a north-facing slope or behind a chimney turns into ice at the eaves, which is why the ice and water shield in our installs runs along every eave and valley.

Higher up, the forested slopes bring a different problem: limbs over roofs, leaves packed into valleys and gutters, and gusts across open ground.

Is Plains the same as Plains Township?

For this page, yes. Plains is one of the township's villages and the name most people use; we work across the whole township, from the river villages up to the houses on the mountain side.

My house was built in the 1990s and still has its first roof. Should I replace it now?

Not automatically. Some roofs from that era have years left; others are curling and shedding granules. The free inspection checks the attic, the shingles and the flashing and gives you a straight answer, with photos.

Do you handle tree damage and the insurance claim?

Yes. If a limb comes through the roof, emergency repairs on nights and weekends are fine, and then we document the damage for your insurer and meet the adjuster at no charge.

Will you use the same shingle on an old village house and a new one?

Owens Corning Duration is our standard on both, and other manufacturers' lines are quoted on request. What changes is the prep: an older house may need layers stripped and boards replaced, a newer one usually needs better ventilation.
