Roofing in Salisbury Township

Salisbury Township’s houses and their roofs.

This is a township in two pieces. Allentown and Emmaus meet along a shared border that splits it into eastern and western portions that never touch; the villages of Farmington, Gauff Hill and Summit Lawn are in the east. The land runs from about 220 feet at the Lehigh River to 1,030 feet in Big Rock County Park on South Mountain.

It is also detached-house country: 84 percent of the 5,521 homes are single-family detached, and about the same share are owner-occupied. The building boom came after the war. Roughly 40 percent of homes were built between 1960 and 1979, another 20 percent in the 1940s and '50s, and the median house dates to 1967.

For a roof, that age profile matters. A house from the late 1960s is likely on its second or third roof, and the questions now are decking, ventilation and whether the last crew laid shingles over shingles. We serve both halves from our office in Newtown.

Know the house

Roofs you’ll find around Salisbury Township.

  • Houses from the 1960s–70s boom

Four in ten homes date from these two decades. Lower-pitched roofs from this era shed water more slowly than steep ones, so worn shingles and missing eave protection show up as stains along the soffit and the first few feet of ceiling.

  • Homes on the South Mountain slopes

Higher lots and wooded hillsides bring more wind and more shade. Shaded roofs stay damp longer and grow moss and algae, while exposed ones lose shingles in gusts.

  • Pre-war houses

About 14 percent of homes predate 1940. They tend to have steeper roofs, older chimneys and board sheathing rather than plywood, which changes how a new roof is fastened down.

  • Homes from 1980 on

A quarter of the housing is newer. Original roofs from the 1980s and '90s are reaching replacement age, and attic ventilation deserves a check before a new roof goes on.

Mountain-side wind and deep snow years

The 2016 blizzard was a township event: the local paper reported Salisbury pushing 30 inches of snow, close to the record 31.9 inches measured at the Lehigh Valley airport. A normal winter brings about 33 inches across the valley. Houses up on South Mountain catch the wind, and trees over a roof drop limbs and leaves into gutters and valleys, which holds water and ice exactly where shingles are weakest.

“David and his crew were great from start to finish. They were able to provide a quote that explained in full detail all the work that would be completed. For me I needed replacment of a 40 square roof and new gutters with leaf guards. They were the best price around. I had quotes that were three times the cost. It's crazy out there and i always shop around. They were able to complete the entire roof in a day. The crew was able to protect all growth around my house and clean to a point where you would never know they were there. Everything was install great with no issues and I would recommend Mission Roof to anyone.”

Which part of Salisbury do you cover, east or west?

Both. The township is split in two by its neighbors' shared border, and we serve all of it, from the villages in the eastern portion to the western portion out toward Dorneyville.

My house was built in the late 1960s. Is the roof on it original?

Very unlikely; a roof that old has usually been replaced at least once. What matters is whether the last job was a tear-off or new shingles over old ones. We check the layers and the decking during the free inspection and tell you what we found.

Do trees over my roof really shorten its life?

They can. Shade keeps shingles damp, leaves clog valleys and gutters, and limbs come down in storms. Trimming is an arborist's job; we look for the damage trees leave behind and keep valleys and penetrations sealed.

What does replacing rotten decking cost?

A flat per-sheet rate written into the contract, typically $85 to $125 per 4x8 sheet. Every sheet we replace is photographed, so the number on the final bill matches what you can see.
