Roofing in Perkasie

Perkasie’s houses and their roofs.

The borough was formed in 1879 around the railroad's Landis Ridge tunnel, then grew on cigar making, garment shops and a trolley line to Philadelphia. A 2019 survey of the town center found that more than half its buildings went up between 1880 and 1920, mostly early Craftsman houses with pedestal porches and Gothic Victorian designs, and that brick is the most common material because the town once had its own brickworks beside the Perkiomen Creek.

The census backs that up: about a quarter of the borough's homes were built before 1940, the median dates to 1972, and the 1980s added more than one home in five. Most striking is how many houses share a wall. Almost three in ten units are single attached houses, the twins and rows common in the older blocks downtown.

With old brick twins and Victorian frame houses, we repair what can be repaired, and when we re-roof one half of a twin, we meet the other half cleanly.

Know the house

Roofs you’ll find around Perkasie.

  • Brick twins and row houses

Two or more homes under one continuous roof. When one side is replaced, the seam at the party wall and the chimney between the units are where leaks start, so we flash that line properly and show you the photos.

  • Victorian and early Craftsman houses

Steep gables, dormers and porches from the borough's 1880 to 1920 boom. Low-slope porch roofs are worth checking first, a tear-off on a house this old can uncover board sheathing, and chimney flashing has to be cut into the brick, not caulked on.

  • Perkasie Park cottages

The camp meeting grounds, listed on the National Register in 2016, hold dozens of small seasonal cottages around the 1886 auditorium. Small cottage roofs reward careful repair over heavy-handed replacement.

  • 1980s neighborhoods

About a fifth of the borough's homes. These roofs have usually been replaced once; if not, they are long overdue.

Tornadoes next door, wind and creek-side damp

On August 18, 2021, an EF1 tornado crossed Hilltown Township toward Silverdale, tearing a metal roof off a garage, dropping branches on a farmhouse roof on Souderton Road and ripping roofing off a shop at North Dublin Pike. On March 31, 2022, another EF1 ran along Souderton Road and blew shingles off several well-built buildings in Bedminster. In Perkasie itself, the National Weather Service recorded gusts of 60 mph on May 24, 2012.

Low ground along the East Branch of the Perkiomen floods in heavy rain, as it did in spring 2014; shaded lots near the water are where moss and rotted fascia tend to show up first.

“I had an excellent experience with Mission Roof, who recently completed a full roof replacement on a set of twin homes, including mine. The amount of work required—especially with a full redeck—was significant, and yet they completed the entire job in just about a day and a half. Even with some weather delays, their efficiency was truly impressive. Their professionalism stood out from day one. Communication was clear and consistent, and the crew was extremely courteous. Cleanliness was clearly a top priority—they used tarps in every possible area to protect the property and made sure everything was spotless when they wrapped up. The new roof looks fantastic and, more importantly, it's performing flawlessly—previous leak issues are completely gone. The price was very fair for the level of quality, both in materials and workmanship. A special shoutout to Dave, who was great to work with. He explained everything clearly—from what they needed from us to how and when the work would be done. He made the process smooth and stress-free. I 100% recommend Mission Roof to anyone—homeowners or commercial property managers alike. Top-notch work, great people, and outstanding value.”

I own half of a Perkasie twin. Can I replace my side of the roof without my neighbor?

Usually, yes. We tie the new roof into the old one at the party line, flash it so water can't get between the two, and photograph the joint. If your neighbor wants to do theirs at the same time, it saves each of you some setup cost and the two sides match.

Does Perkasie review roof replacements on historic houses?

We found no local historic review ordinance for the borough, so a re-roof follows the normal permit process, which we handle. National Register listing alone, as at Perkasie Park, doesn't restrict what private owners do with their own money.

My cottage in Perkasie Park has a leaking roof. Is it too small a job?

No. Small roofs get the same inspection and written report as big ones, and a repair comes with the same written workmanship warranty.

Can you match old shingles on a twin when only one section is damaged?

We try hard to, and we'll tell you honestly how close a match will look before you decide. Sometimes replacing a full slope reads better from the street than a patch.
